Ali Arshad

Q: When did you first realize you wanted to be an artist?
A: I never did. It just happened.

Q: What kind of environment did you grow up in, and how did it shape your artistic sensibilities?
A: I grew up in quintessential desi household raised by a single parent. My artistic sensibilities are mainly informed by my predominant defense mechanism; intellectualization. My practice focuses on failing to make meaning out of things that don’t concern us and bringing that to the viewer’s awareness.

Q: What’s art for you, how do you define it?
A: Art is a subject to punctuate creativity and discipline ideologies for a variety of meaningful reasons.

Q: What role does emotion play in your creative process and finished pieces?
A: An immensely profound one. My creative process is mostly utilized to hide all emotions I may be experiencing and the finished pieces reveal all the emotions I had denied in my creative process. It is the presence of those emotions which makes my practice rewarding.

Q: Can you walk us through your creative process?
A: I see. I observe. I ignore. I cry. I whine. I forget. I stop. I focus on my breathing. I go back. I stop. I allow myself to be seen. I allow myself to be observed. The work is mostly made in between these steps.

Q: What mediums do you use in your practice and why?
A: Mixed Media, Earthworks, Installations, Research, Text, Fiber, Found Objects.

Q: What inspires you most in life outside of art?
A: Academia

Q: If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
A: Anwar Jalal Shemza – to learn.

Q: What message do you hope your art conveys about you and your journey?
A: … that love, light and gratitude are vessels. Pour!

Q: If you had to describe your relationship with your art in one sentence, what would it be?
A: I’d use the words of Uzma Aslam Khan to explain that; “opposite of peace is not war, the opposite of peace is inertia”

Q: If your art had a soundtrack, what kind of music would it include?
A: The following; Taylor Swift, Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, Wazir Patar, Frank Ocean.

Q: How does the art market influence your practice?
A: Fortunately, due to the dearth of knowledge around the precepts of marketing in my sphere of influence, I have had the privilege to create the work I will to create. However, to see the art market prosper and flourish, it is a privilege I am willing to forgo.

Q: How has the internet and virtual presence impacted your practice?
A: It has allowed for my practice to be more accessible, allowing me to grow naturally.
